Great for commuters, office professionals, and one-coffee-drinker households, this personal coffeemaker brews 15 ounces of coffee directly into a stainless-steel travel mug. The mug has a rubber handle for a safe grip and a lid to keep coffee hot. It's tapered to a 2-1/2-inch-diameter bottom, so it fits most vehicle cup holders. The coffeemaker itself is designed for an on-the-go coffee drinker. It has a permanent filter--no messy disposable paper filters required--and shuts off automatically after brewing. The mug, filter, filter basket, and mug lid are dishwasher-safe, and the coffeemaker can also be used to heat water for tea, hot chocolate, and instant foods like oatmeal and soup. Made of gleaming black plastic, it measures 9-3/4 inches high, 7 inches wide, and 6 inches deep, and carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack Troubleshooting Steps: Brewing Coffee – 1.) Lift the one-piece cover. Pour one full mug of cold water into the water reservoir. 2.) Place the permanent filter into the filter basket. Add ground coffee, (we recommend approximately 2 ½ tablespoons). Close the cover. 3.) Remove the lid from the travel mug and add sweetener, cream or milk to the mug before brewing; replace the lid. Place the mug on the mug rest directly under the filter basket opening. 4.) Press the power switch and the power indicator light will illuminate. The coffeemaker and power indicator light turn off automatically when brewing is done. Allow the coffee to finish dripping from the unit before removing your travel mug. Note: There will be slightly less coffee in your travel mug than the amount of water added, as the grounds absorb some of the liquid.

This is a really good coffee maker although poorly designed

- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2013This is the fifth Black and Decker Personal coffee maker I have purchased in the past 10 years. They usually last for about 2 years so it is a great value. I find that over time the heating element eventually dies. It does not happen slowly, it happens in an instant. It is not a safety hazard though it just stops working. So I always keep a second one on hand in the box for when the one I am currently using dies. I never use the Black and Decker mugs because I drink my coffee at home and never on my commute so I just donate the mugs. So I cannot comment on the quality of the mug or if it makes the coffee taste strange. I can only commet on the coffee maker itself. It is awesome. It is super easy to use. I love Maxwell House and even if I have family staying over I can make them personal cups of flavored coffee they enjoy that I do not. I have never had anyone say that the coffee tasted bad or was not too hot. On the contrary, everyone loves this coffee maker and my neighbors and family have actually purchased one themselves after trying mine. I personally think this makes a better cup of coffee than my larger coffee maker which is a top of the line Cuisinart. This Black and Decker produces coffee that is very hot, it is always brewed perfectly and it is so easy to clean up. The filter works extremely well and is easy to dump the grounds into the trash and then just run it under water and it cleans up quickly without any mess. You just have to wait until the filter area cools off from the hot water than runs through it. I also have never had coffee grounds in my coffee because if you measure it as per the instructions you will not ever overflow the filter. I think anyone who gives this a bad review did not read the instructions that come with the product. This is a superior personal coffee maker and you should never have to use a secondary filter in addition to the permanent filter. I highly recommend this versus any Pod system. Just measure per the instructions and you will have the best mug of coffee and at the best price on the market. It takes only a couple of minutes, so it is also super quick. It also has a very small footprint so it does not take up a lot of space on the counter top and it is easy to store too in a drawer or under the sink because it is not very tall either. It also accomodates a multitude of mug sizes. Again though you need to measure your coffee and water per the instructions to ensure there is not an overflow and that the coffee to water ratio is correct to produce an excellent cup of coffee.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2018Finally - after many, many Goldilocks moments of trial and error - I've found the perfect instant coffeemaker!
I prefer cold-dripped coffee above all else, but because of the hassle of making it, I don't always have it on hand. Depending on my schedule and energy, I can go from a day or two to months before I have time the time or inclination to make - and wait for - another batch. So it's important to have a Plan B coffee option on hand in the interim.
I have tried many, many options for making an instant cup or pot of coffee, and none of them have been ideal. I have been looking for something that is instant, simple, and small enough to leave out on my counter all the time without taking up too much space. After a long search, I'm finally having my Goldilocks moment, having found one that meets ALL of my criteria.
Just to be clear, this is an absolutely NO-FRILLS coffeemaker. It only holds enough water for a single cup. No delay option. No button to control the brew strength (just add more coffee grounds). No warmer. And that's fine by me.
I love that it not only fits under my rather short cabinets, but I can still pour the water in without having to drag the coffeemaker out across the counter. You can use any cup with it, as long as the cup fits under the drip hole. You do need to be aware of how much water the cup will hold, and be careful not to overfill the reservoir.
If you use the thermal cup that comes with it, or the same cup(s) over and over again, at first, you just need to pour the water from the cup into the reservoir, to ensure that it will not overflow the cup. As others have said, you do need to allow for some water remaining in the coffee grounds. After a few brews in the same cup, you will soon learn to eyeball the water level and won't need to measure it before pouring, which will make it go quicker.
The recommended amount of coffee grounds of 2-1/2 tablespoons is about right. I use that for my first cup in the morning, and for subsequent cups, I'm happy with 1-1/2 to 2 tablespoons per cup. Overall, I'm finding that, cup for cup, I'm using about the same amount of total coffee grounds per bag of coffee with this coffeemaker as I am to make an equivalent amount of cups in a larger 12-cup coffeemaker. And more important, I'm actually saving money, because I'm not throwing away 1-2 cups a day that I don't drink because it tastes old (even after putting it in a thermal carafe). So as far as total coffee grounds consumed, at least for me, it doesn't cost more to use it.
Brewing time takes a little less than 3 minutes per cup. I usually put a dessert ramekin on the base after removing my cup to catch any lingering drips.
It comes with a permanent filter basket, but I like to add a paper filter on top of that, just to ensure that no grounds escape. I find without the filter, although I don't notice any grounds in my coffee cup, the grounds do tend to work their way up around the filter basket and on the upper rim of the water reservoir, and I don't like that. So a paper filter helps. So far I've been happy with the Schnucks (my local grocery story brand) 7 In Fluted Basket 1-4 Cup Coffee Filters ($1.99/200) and the Melitta 8-12 Cup Brown Basket Coffee Filters ($2.48/200 at Walmart). I do find that the 8-12 cup filters provide more coverage, and absolutely no grounds escape to the top, whereas with the 1-4 cup filters, a few grounds still do escape, but are easily wiped off. There is no need to use the ridiculously over-priced single-cup filters that are made for single-cup brewers. The 1-4 cup and 8-12 filters work just fine!
Every other day or so, I bring the coffeemaker to the sink, turn it upside down, and rinse off the coffee grounds that accumulate on the top of the filter by holding it directly under the sink sprayer. I love how easy it is to clean.
The coffee is "warm enough" when it is brewed, although for my own personal taste, I would like it just a tad bit hotter, especially since I add a lot of cream. But I have gotten used to the temp, so I wouldn't take any points away for that. Also, I have found that the thermal cup does not keep the coffee quite as warm as other thermal containers I have. But I didn't buy it for the cup, and even if it didn't come with the cup, I still think it is worth the price.
I am very, very happy with this purchase and would buy it again as well as recommend it to others!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 1-cup brewer with permanent cone filter, coffee is hot, machine well made.
I bought one of these in 1994-95, and used it twice a day ever since. The original is still working, but when I saw this in a "warehouse deal" at half price, I decided to buy it as a replacement. Like "dog years," 25 is "old age" for my original machine. Black and Decker offer several single-cup brewers. This has a metal "thermos"-type mug with a tight-fitting lid and a Handle! This means no hot plate and no worry about accidental burns. It uses an extremely fine metal mesh (gold-plated, I think) cone filter. Some say there's no difference between basket filters and cone filters. I've had better luck with cone filters, and I know is that this machine makes excellent coffee. And the coffee is Hot! Not "sort-of" hot, but steaming hot and an excellent brew. The insulated mug keeps it up to temperature for over an hour. I'm cleaning the old unit and keeping it as a spare, except for the mug. These mugs are an ideal size - not tall and tippy, and enough capacity to satisfy without wasting. One bonus of this mug is that the tapered bottom end fits well in most automobile cup holders with no rocking or tipping. For some reason, the regular price for these is quite high on Amazon's Canadian site, but at the sale price, an excellent bargain. I think my first unit cost $12-$13 in 1995, which works out to 50 cents a year - and it's still going strong. The new machine seems to be of the same high quality, so I'm confident that it will be making my 1st cup of the day long after I retire. These are a really good machine - well made, easy to clean, compact. I've seen or tried other 1-cup drip brewers by brands that didn't come close to this level of quality - they made lukewarm, muddy coffee, were hard to clean, or bits fell off. None of that here, and most important of all, it makes an excellent cup of hot coffee.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing
The best single cup coffee maker I've ever had. The brewing cycle is very quick, the coffee is hot and the taste is perfect. I just wish custom size paper filters were available, though works perfectly with size 2 paper filters. I'm very happy with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Convenient
Works as intended and brews better coffee than my Tassimo. I'm guessing this is because I can actually press the grounds down, whereas in a Tassimo cup they're a bit loose. No more watery coffee. As the only coffee drinker, this is great. No issues so far. If you're looking for something basic, is affordable, and makes a single cup, this might be what you're looking for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hace bien su trabajo
